Epi-SCIENCE

As science and knowledge evolve, it is necessary to rethink the way in which research questions are addressed. The importance of multidisciplinary work that allows combining the experience and knowledge of specialists in different fields of action is becoming more and more evident. The complexity of today's reality poses challenges that exceed what disciplinary research can offer. Internationally, high-impact journals such as Nature, Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, PLOS One, and Royal Society Open Science, among others, encourage the dissemination of works of this nature.

The study and work with communicable diseases and chronic diseases are challenging, given their high level of complexity. From a mathematical modeling perspective, it is known that its dynamics, evolution, and distribution around the world depend not only on the characteristics of the disease but also have a strong social component, as well as, climatic and environmental factors, mobility, among others, that require joint and multidisciplinary work.

Health authorities around the world face multiple challenges every year due to the appearance of new diseases, sudden growth in the number of cases of endemic diseases, or unforeseen public health situations that are managed by external factors. In particular, Costa Rica faces outbreaks of vector-borne diseases, respiratory disease outbreaks, and an increase in patients with diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cancer, among others. Hence, researchers from all over the world and at the local level are interested in studying them, seeking a greater understanding that allows their prevention and control.

A vital part of science is sharing and communicating the findings so that they serve as support and encouragement in future research, as well as the development of strategies for control, prevention, and management of health problems facing Costa Rican society.

Revista de Biología Tropical

Revista de Biología Tropical / International Journal of Tropical Biology and Conservation, is a full open access journal from the University of Costa Rica focused on tropical biology and conservation. All issues, from 1953 to the present, are available for free download here.

OUR SCOPE (Objective)

Our journal publishes scientific articles that increase our understanding of biology, conservation, and biomedical life sciences in the tropics.

Selection criteria are the quantity and quality of new information and its potential interest to the general audience as well as to specialists. The studied ecosystems, or at least the organisms, must be tropical.

THEMATIC COVERAGE
Regulear issues

We give preference to feature articles that include testable study questions —for example, studies with an experimental design to evaluate factors that influence biological variables, or studies that explain the mechanisms underlying biological or biomedical phenomena such as, for example, behavior or physiology. Field studies should be extensive enough to identify temporal or spatial patterns. We also welcome systematic or phylogenetic studies above the species level, meta-analyses, and bibliometric studies that critically examine what is known and what remains to be done in any field of tropical biology.

Review articles are mostly published by invitation of the Editorial Board to recognized authorities. Other specialists interested in submitting a review must first send a titled outline to biologia.tropical@ucr.ac.cr. Accepted proposals receive the same evaluation as regular manuscripts.

All reviews and meta-analyses need to identify and fill gaps in knowledge, present methodological advances, and propose future research directions.

Note about old data: We encourage authors to compare old results with more recent data or to use the data within a meta-analysis. Studies based on data collected over six years ago must include a justification of why they are still of interest, and in the case of field studies, they need to present spatial patterns or temporal trends of historical significance. The Editorial Board evaluates the validity of methods and the relevance of results before sending the manuscript to reviewers.

The journal now has one issue per year (continuous publication from January 1st to December 31st) and publishes articles the same week that an edited version becomes available. Until 2021, it published four regular issues per year: issue 1 (January – March), issue 2 (April – June), issue 3 (July – September), and issue 4 (October – December).

We do not publish notes; short communications; species lists; single new species; range extensions; new records and other preliminary or short studies; or highly specialized technical reports based on protocols (e.g. agricultural, forestry, biochemical, microbiological, aquaculture, fishery or similar studies that only apply well known techniques to particular cases of local interest).

SPECIAL ISSUES

Special issues financed by research organizations are accepted after approval by the Editorial Board. They may contain a diversity of report types, including short papers, new records, new species descriptions, checklists, technical reports, etc. To publish a special issue, contact biologia.tropical@ucr.ac.cr for a cost estimate.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Researchers with an interest in studying all fields of tropical biology.

Revista humanidades

E-mail address: humanidades@ucr.ac.cr

P.O. Box: 11501-2060.

The Revista humanidades aims to disseminate academic production and research in the field of humanistic, scientific and artistic studies, as well as to promote reflection on general studies that have as a transversal axis or thematic coverage human beings in their work and thinking. In this way, it seeks to become a space that encourages interest in the construction that humanity makes of itself.

The target audience is constituted by the international community of researchers, undergraduate and graduate students and scholars (scientists or artists) interested in a permanent or specific way in the topics and approaches of humanistic studies.

It is a peer-reviewed, peer-reviewed, open access journal of articles in English, Spanish and Portuguese. This journal does not charge for receiving, processing or publishing articles (APC).

The Field of Humanities and Multidisciplinarity

The Revista humanidades structures its sections on the premise that human beings are a reality made up of a set of diverse and complex relationships that they establish among themselves, interactions that, despite their dynamic and constantly changing nature, can nevertheless be classified into three types that encompass all human relationships:

  1. relations with nature

  2. relations with other human beings

  3. relations with oneself.

However, given that this classification of human relations does not respond to the academic division of knowledge with which current knowledge is produced, it is not convenient to take this classification as sections. Rather, these relations should be considered as a plexus that crosses, not vertically but horizontally, each article within each section of the journal. The latter follows the current segmentation of knowledge, but only as a starting point, in order to arrive at the production of new approaches that transcend the current fragmentation of hyper-specialized knowledge that mutilates, or even makes invisible, the human which, in the end, will always be transcendent, irreducible and ungraspable in its totality, since none of its manifestations has the capacity to exhaust it.
