Resumen

Este estudio se orientó hacia la identificación y el análisis de los factores psicosociales, los cuales determinan que una persona adulta mayor costarricense mantenga estilos de vida activos o exitosos. Los hallazgos evidenciaron la importancia del fenómeno a partir del análisis de las condiciones sociales, psicológicas y biofísicas y se identificaron las psicosociales como las más acertadas para explicarlo. Se reconocieron las variables de carácter psicológico, como las principales determinantes y predictoras, en particular, la autoeficacia percibida y estado cognitivo y una serie de recursos personales como el pensamiento positivo, la perseverancia y la capacidad de adaptación, entre otras. Lo anterior se explicó en conjunto con la presencia de variables sociales como adecuadas redes de apoyo, nivel socioeconómico, tendencia a altos niveles educativos, por ejemplo, lo cual permitió construir un congruente ?retrato? del envejecimiento exitoso o activo en las personas adultas mayores estudiadas.
