Analysis of university governance in western Mexico

Abstract

The objective of this analysis was to identify the existing differences between the declaration of a university governance model and its management in the model's indicators. In such a way, it is explicitly evident that not all HEIs display the components of their governance model, suggesting an absence of evaluation and monitoring in university governance. To achieve this, educational institutions in the western region of Mexico affiliated with the National Association of Universities and Higher Education Institutions (ANUIES) were examined using a descriptive methodology. The findings reveal that university governance is present only on half of the analyzed HEIs' websites and that only universities (technological, polytechnic, and public) display a higher percentage of university governance indicator systems. Although there are criteria for choosing indicators, it is essential to emphasize that all HEIs must manage, in a transparent manner and with a model, the indicators ensuring accurate and truthful measurement of governance. In this way, this research contributes to outlining a general overview of the current landscape of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in their performance of university governance. It also provides an early glimpse into research with a higher level of analysis and in-depth exploration of specific cases, aiming to enhance indicator models.
